What is AWS Elemental MediaTailor?
AWS Elemental MediaTailor is a channel assembly and personalized ad-insertion service for over-the-top (OTT) applications. The purpose of AWS Elemental MediaTailor is to allow for OTT applications to monetize their service with personal advertising. MediaTailor ad insertion supports: HLS and DASH streams for live and video on demand services.
What is Server Side Ad Insertion?
Server Side Ad Insertion (SSAI) allows media owners to insert ads directly into the primary content stream. This can be played from the same source location to minimize the possibility of buffering brought on by excessive format and bitrate variations during video playback. Likewise, this process allows for a smooth transition switching between content and ad, providing the same user experience as broadcast TV. The diagram below shows an example of SSAI:
What is Client Side Ad Insertion?
In contrast to server-side ad insertion, Client Side Ad Insertion (SSAI) ads are inserted into a video stream on the client device (such as a smart tv, gaming console, or mobile device), whereby the video player requests an ad from an ad server via the video player located inside an application or website. Hence content and ads are separated; the player plays content and advertisements independently and switches between the two as needed. Furthermore, it offers many advantages, including the ability to support various kinds of ads, be they skippable, clickable, or closable; track metrics for ad performance reporting, and show personalized ads to individual users

AWS Elemental MediaTailor is different from other SSAI solutions, due to its implementation of detailed client-side viewing metrics. The majority of SSAI solutions don’t provide detailed metrics, as they report on CDN server logs or ad servers. AWS SSAI MediaTailor solution provides advertisers with more personalized and granular metrics from their client base.
